In the spring of 2014 we wrapped up an extensive renovation/addition for a client of ours in Cumberland County. The house sits in close knit community overlooking the picturesque coastline found here in Southern Maine. Having already completed a handful of projects over the years on this house for the clients we were well acquainted with the bones of the house and the challenges we would be facing. The plan for this phase of the project as designed by Bruce Butler, AIA (By Design) included:

  • Build a new two story addition to enlarge the master bedroom and adjacent bedroom

  • Complete gut and new layout for Master Bath

  • Renovate another bathroom

  • Create a finished family room/activity room

  • Create a third garage space

  • New roofing

  • Replace front porch decking

  • Landscaping

The challenges of building on this particular site started with its location. On the rocky coastline there was the chance that when excavating for a foundation we would hit ledge. This was the case on this project. However because the foundation for ...

Early in the spring we were approached by a husband and wife who wanted to update their kitchen and deck. The kitchen was circa 1980’s and while the layout was acceptable the look didn’t match some of the other details in the house. The deck was oddly shaped and didn’t properly allow them to enjoy the view of the rest of property. Also on the list of things to do was to replace a triple casement window with a bay window additional space for the homeowners indoor plants. We also replaced the large picture window in front of the sink.

Once I had taken all the measurements of the existing kitchen I started my design for the new cabinets. Because the homeowners liked the flow of the current kitchen I kept the layout of my n...

We are proud to be breaking ground on a new home in Brunswick near Bowdoin College. The owners who coincidentally live in the neighborhood a couple of blocks away came to us early in the summer and expressed an interest in having us design their house. Using Softplan (A CAD program that allows for both 2D and 3D representation of plans) we worked out a design that incorporated a open floor plan on the first floor with a living/dining area, kitchen, office, mudroom and bedrooms upstairs. The main building is connected to the two car garage by an ell. There will be a full height basement for the main house and connector. Using attic trusses on the connector and the garage allows for future liveable space with minimal framing costs. The exterior of the house will feature two covered porches facing the street and a patio for the backyard.

We broke ground at the end of September. The first step was to clear the lot of the undergrowth and trees. Once this was done and we had the building envelope positioned to everyone’s satisfaction it was time to start digging. With the soil in the area being mostly sand our excavator had to oversize his hole. Next up comes the footing and foundation walls. Because of the width of the building we’ve had to dig the foundation in two stages. If we did it all at once we would not have a way to get the excavator into the backyard to back fill once concrete had set up. So instead we will excavate and pour the garage foundation once we have back filled the main house.

It has been nearly a year since we started work on a 1800’s Farmhouse renovation / addition project in Yarmouth. Now in the final stages of work all of the custom cabinets are in place and save for a few projects outside our finish carpentry work is done. Below is a slideshow of the custom kitchen and entertainment center that we built for the clients. As more rooms are finished off I will update with pictures.
